Bringing daylight into homes using easily accessible materials

About 40% of the world’s population use solid fuels for cooking and lighting, putting individuals and families at risk of fire and respiratory diseases. A major concern in developing countries is the reduction of the use of solid fuels and kerosene after dark. However, many people living in make-shift homes or slums do not even have access to the sun during day-time hours as the houses are too cramped to allow for windows, until now. A team of students from MIT dreamed up a very simple and accessible way to bring sunlight into these homes using only a plastic liter bottle, water and bleach.
